While helping a group of hardworking women plant rice in rural northern Thailand I asked the cheerful, laughing women, “What do you do for fun?” “Plant rice” was the choral reply. For these women, there was no distinction between work and play. They experienced life as recurring moments of a decision to enjoy their circumstances. The message to me: Life isn’t compartments. I write all the time. I may or may not have paper. Welcome to my world.
