Voice Lessons is the story of two celestial beings named HE and SHE who reside in a Caribbean utopia somewhere between heaven and earth. In exchange for the privilege of remaining together for eternity they perform time travel missions. Their responsibility is to collect lessons from the experiences of Africans in the Diaspora that can help relieve the current suffering of the people. Once collected they disperse the lessons as intentions that people feel as “inspiration”. The story begins as they prepare to travel in time for the lessons of the day, the Voice Lessons.
On the eve of a public dedication of a statue erected as tribute to Sojourner Truth, the statue becomes alive so that Sojourner can relive an unresolved pain in her life. Despite her many accomplishments and public persona of strength she bears the trauma of sexual abuse from husband and wife slave owners John and Sally Dumont. The truth of this abuse was suppressed in her book and her lectures in order to obtain the support of white abolitionists and draw other supporters for the freedom of Blacks. Now, in 2013, she releases the truth of the abuse aloud in order to provide strength to present day victims of sexual abuse of all hues.
